Green Heat, Magaldi among the Italian Renewable Energy Stories: Italy can be a pioneer for global industrial decarbonization with TES

The solutions of the Magaldi Group are confirmed as key players in the "100 Italian Renewable Energy Stories" Report, promoted by Symbola - Foundation for Italian Quality and ENEL, in collaboration with KEY - The Energy Transition Expo, dedicated to technologies developed in the renewable energy sector, presented in Rome on May 29, 2024, at the Enel Auditorium. Letizia Magaldi, Executive Vice President of Magaldi Green Energy, also participated in the event.

Italy poised to lead global decarbonization of energy-intensive industrial heat processes, says Magaldi Green Energy Vice President

"Forty-five percent of global CO2 emissions - emphasized Letizia Magaldi, Executive Vice President of Magaldi Green Energy - come from thermal energy production, and considering that 90% of this production is based on fossil fuels, we realize the importance of finding a sustainable solution for the decarbonization of all those energy-intensive industrial processes based on heat. Innovation in TES thermal storage now allows us to replace the gas used in industrial processes with renewable sources. Italy has a strong industrial infrastructure and, in this regard, can act as a global pioneer".

MGTES enables energy-intensive industries to electrify and decarbonize heat production

“MGTES - Magaldi Green Thermal Energy Storage, developed by our company and covered by an international patent - continued Letizia Magaldi - employs a storage technology based on a fluidized bed of sand. The system releases high-temperature thermal energy on demand, up to 400°C, which is necessary for energy-intensive industries such as paper, food & beverage, chemicals, and plastics. These industries are currently highly dependent on gas for heat production. Thermal storage solutions like the MGTES solution, when coupled with renewable sources, allow these companies to break free from gas dependency for heat generation, thus electrifying and decarbonizing their production processes".

Magaldi's MGTES recognized in "100 Italian renewable energy stories" Report for innovative thermal storage solution

The solution was included in the "100 Italian Renewable Energy Stories" Report for the following reasons: "By their very nature - the Report states - renewable energy sources, like solar and wind, depend on weather conditions. To use them 24 hours a day every day of the year, efficient storage systems need to be set up, able to overcome the problem due to intermittence. In 2020 Magaldi developed the MGTES - Magaldi Green Thermal Energy Storage unit, an innovative storage cell covered by 11 international patents, that accumulates green energy. The MGTES storage cell technology is based on a bed of sand rendered fluid, that uses silicon and steel to store energy produced by both electrical and thermal renewable sources, in the form of heat”.

“With its ability to accumulate intermittent renewable energy – continues the Report - the MGTES releases thermal energy of up to 400 degrees evenly, making it directly usable in industrial processes, such as those for paper, food & beverages, plastics, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. Given that more than 70% of industrial energy consumption goes into producing heat, and more than 90% of the same comes from fossil sources (gas, oil, or coal), the MGTES significantly speeds up the ecological transition, guaranteeing efficiency and modularity, and allowing decarbonisation of industrial thermal processes. What makes the MGTES technology unique in the world, is that it is a thermal storage solution specifically designed for industries that devour energy”.

EnelX and Magaldi Group collaborate to implement TES thermal energy storage technology at IGI, supplier to Ferrero Group

“EnelX and the Magaldi Group - Letizia Magaldi highlighted - have initiated a collaboration to apply TES Thermal Energy Storage technology, a thermal storage system that generates thermal steam, at a company in Salerno, IGI di Buccino, which produces vegetable oils and is a supplier to the confectionery Ferrero Group".
